“How people die remains in the memory of those who live on”
– Dame Cicely
Our mission is to provide a personal and unique experience through the end of life transition from this physical realm.
Our death doula services are tailored to support and empower individuals and families before and during the transitional phase of the end of this life.
Meet the Owner
Phillina Lofton is a small town Mississippi girl with a dream. She has both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in social work and has worked in all genres of social services. However, when she began her career in hospice over 15 years ago she knew that this was her calling and it quickly became a passion. During the years of service as a hospice social worker, Phillina has been able to gain first hand knowledge of the needs that individuals and families have before and during the end of life transitions. She understands the "fear" of death by some and the reluctance to discuss the topic of death, which often leads to people being unprepared and leaving loved ones guessing what the person's wishes are. Tranquil Passages is a dream manifested that will help with the education and support needed by all, as we all are already on our passage to the next phase.

What is a "death doula?"A death doula is a newer term that is becoming more popular globally. The word doula originates from the in Greek word doule', which means female helper or someone who serves. Death doulas are also called end-of-life doula or death midwife by some. A death doula is a trained nonmedical professional who provides emotional, physical, and educational support for someone nearing death or who is interested in preparing for end-of-life transitions. The death doula provides comfort, guidance and support for end-of-life related needs and makes the dying process more pleasant for everyone involved.

What services do you provide?Tranquil Passages provides support, education, and advocacy for our clients. We complete a comprehensive initial assessment that will allow us to see what needs you have and create an individualized plan of service that is tailored to the individual. Our services include but are not limited to: end of life planning (within our scope), community referrals/resources, emotional support, comfort measures for dying based on the person's wishes/needs, life review and legacy project support, respite for caregivers, logistical and household support and after death support *if needed*
-
What is the cost for your services? You can schedule a FREE 15-minute consultation call. During this call, there will be a brief introduction to our services and a brief overview of your needs and an answer to any question that you may have. We then develop an individualized care plan for you. Depending on your needs we will either create an hourly fee ranging from $50-200 per hour or a one-time fee that will be dependent on the care plan. Please note that travel fees per visit are not included in this rate. We do have private donations for individuals who are facing financial strains and needs financial support for our services. If you qualify, you may receive sliding scale prices *limited availability* We do not currently accept any form of insurance.
-
Why do I need a death doula?Death Doulas are a calming and reassuring presence with knowledge of the death process, and a compassionate resource for families who may be overwhelmed and grieving at the impending death of their loved one. Death Doulas offer a variety of services to assist in the transition of dying, but are first and foremost a grounding, reliable, knowledgeable and comforting presence during a time that can be stressful for some.
-
When should I start your services?Death is inevitable and has no age, race, religion or other barriers. We encourage every adult to begin to think about and make plans for the end-of-life process. The sooner the doula can enter into the process, the more time can be spent getting to know the individual and family, creating quality care plans, prioritizing end of life needs, and creating sacred space and meaning for the individual and family. For older adults or the terminally ill...the time is NOW!
-
How are you different from what hospice offers?Working with a good hospice service is highly recommended when you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness or your health has determined that you may have 6 months or less of this physical life. Our doula services do not replace hospice's medical team of nursing and physician care, we complement hospice teams seamlessly and work in conjunction of their services. We offer more time, more personalized attention, more continuity at bedside, more advocacy, and more availability beyond what hospice is normally able to provide due to Medicare guidelines. Our extensive training exceeds what hospice volunteer programs provide as each of us have faced in depth our fears and emotions around death. We are trained and practiced to be with intense and difficult emotions. Our full-time presence and companionship at vigil and at death, our advocacy in hospitals or at home, our coaching to customize end-of-life care plans for spiritual, physical, practical and life review needs, and most of all, our consistent relationships with our clients are not a service offered anywhere else.
